TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Transportation has set a special train tariff of Rp3,000 per person for farmers and traders traveling on the Merak-Rangkasbitung route and vice versa.
Arif Anwar, Director of Railway Traffic and Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, announced that this new tariff would be implemented starting Monday, December 1, 2025.
"We have instructed KAI Commuter, through the Public Service Obligation (PSO) scheme, to set the train tariff for farmers and traders at Rp3,000, similar to the Commuter Line Merak service tariff, in order not to burden the public," he explained in a written statement on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
Arif clarified that the PSO is a government subsidy provided through the Directorate General of Railways, intended to suppress train fares and make them affordable for all sectors. This specialized farmers and traders train service was first introduced by KAI Commuter as an innovation earlier in November.
He added that all train sets have undergone rigorous testing to ensure the eligibility and safety of the facilities before operation. This measure minimizes potential risks and guarantees the safety, security, and convenience of passengers. The testing also ensures the service adheres to the safety, reliability, convenience, and equality aspects stipulated in Minister of Transportation Regulation No. 63 of 2019 concerning Minimum Service Standards.
"We appreciate the KAI Group for its innovation in launching this service and hope the farmers and traders train will be well-utilized by those in need," Arif concluded.
Service Details and Booking Requirements
Karina Amanda, KAI Commuter's Vice President Corporate Secretary, confirmed that the train will offer 73 seats in a facing configuration. The service will operate daily with seven departures from Merak and seven journeys from Rangkasbitung, following the current Commuter Line Merak schedule.
Before using this special service, users must register at the counter. Registration requires bringing an identity card and filling out a verification form to obtain the farmers and traders card. Registration is possible both before the date of departure and on the day of departure.
The farmers and traders card allows its owner to book and purchase tickets starting H-7 (seven days) before departure at the Commuter Line Merak station counters.
Karina noted that individuals who wish to use the service but have not registered can still purchase tickets on the day of departure at the counters, provided travel tickets are still available.
Regarding baggage, goods carried are limited to two packages or two bags, with a maximum dimension of centimeters per package.
"For safety and comfort, items with a strong scent, livestock, easily flammable items, and sharp weapons/firearms are strictly prohibited from being brought onto this farmers and traders train," she added.
