CANTIKA.COM, Jakarta - Did you know that a study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders in April 2025 revealed a link between the frequency of sexual activity and good mental health? This indicates the importance of regular sexual activity in maintaining mental health.
A better sex life, better mental health? The researchers of the study examined data from over 14,000 adult Americans aged 20 to 59 to narrow down the effect of sex in all age groups. It turns out that people who have sex at least once a week are almost 24 percent less likely to show signs of moderate to severe depression, as opposed to those who do not engage in intimate activities at all in a month.
Furthermore, the study identified the optimal point to reduce the risk of depression to be around once or twice a week. Beyond that, it reaches a saturation point and does not offer further mental health benefits.
Since this research covered a wide age range of participants, it could be concluded that this pattern remains the same despite factors such as age, physical health, marital status, income, and others. The relationship between gender and lower levels of depression is strongest among younger adults, and based on the ethnic groups covered in the study, Mexican-American participants and non-Hispanic white participants.
Although the research does not establish a direct one-way relationship that sex clearly causes less depression, it is important to note that people who are in a good mood tend to engage in sexual activity. So, it's more of a cyclical pattern where each influences the other.
According to the researchers, sex releases chemicals like endorphins, which contribute to maintaining a good mood. Sexual activity also involves an emotional connection, which in turn relieves stress and anxiety. Although sex may not be a cure or complete prevention for depression, it can help reduce the risk factors for depression and support your and your partner's mental health.
