TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Switzerland secured a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Algeria 2-0 in their Round of 32 match at BC Place in Vancouver on Friday, July 3.
Breel Embolo gave Switzerland an early lead in the 10th minute after finishing a well-worked move created by Johan Manzambi. Dan Ndoye doubled the advantage just after halftime, scoring in the 46th minute to seal victory for Murat Yakin's side.
Switzerland made a strong start and capitalized on Manzambi's attacking run down the left flank. The midfielder broke through Algeria's defense before setting up Embolo, who converted from close range to put the Swiss ahead.
Led by captain Riyad Mahrez, Algeria attempted to respond by attacking through the wings, but Switzerland's disciplined defense prevented them from creating clear scoring opportunities before halftime.
The Swiss extended their lead immediately after the break. Algeria failed to clear the ball from its defensive area, allowing Ndoye to pounce on the loose ball and fire home to make it 2-0.
With a two-goal cushion, Switzerland comfortably controlled the remainder of the match. Midfielders Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler dictated the tempo, while goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was rarely tested.
Although Algeria enjoyed slightly more possession, Switzerland proved more clinical in front of goal. The Swiss registered 11 shots, five of them on target, while Algeria managed eight attempts with only two hitting the target.
The victory sends Switzerland into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the match between Colombia and Ghana. Algeria's World Cup campaign ends in the Round of 32.
