Tempo Film Festival 2026: List of Nominees

1 day ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tempo will once again host the Festival Film Tempo as the culmination of its long-running Tempo Film Selection program, an annual appreciation initiative for Indonesian filmmakers that has been held since 2001.

The event is scheduled for Monday, January 26, 2026, at Graha Bhakti Budaya, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta.

Although widely known for its focus on politics and investigative journalism, Tempo has consistently provided space for the arts, including film.

The tradition began with the Millennium Special Edition in 2001 and later evolved into a dedicated feature, Film Pilihan Tempo, first published in the December 5, 2011 edition.

As part of this long-standing commitment to Indonesian cinema, Festival Film Tempo not only honors selected films each year but also highlights the social, cultural, and political themes explored by filmmakers across the country.

Jury Evaluation and New Categories

Each year, the films evaluated are titles that have been publicly screened, either in cinemas, film festivals, or through digital platforms. Tempo selects films considered to demonstrate strong cinematic quality and merit jury assessment.

Tempo Film Selection 2025 features films released and screened throughout 2025. The jury comprises Tempo arts journalists and film industry figures who are not part of the editorial team.

The evaluation is divided into seven categories: featured film, director, screenplay writer, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, and supporting actress.

This year’s Festival Film Tempo also introduces a new category, Audience’s Choice Featured Film, aimed at encouraging public participation.

The nominees for this category are films that appear on the featured lists across all categories of Tempo Film Selection 2025. Public voting is open at www.tempo.co/filmfavorit

“Festival Film Tempo is a celebration of the national film industry, particularly its artistic achievements and thematic depth. These qualities strengthen our belief that Indonesian cinema will continue to grow and evolve,” said Festival Film Tempo Committee Chair Iwan Kurniawan on Tuesday, January 13, 2025.

No Limits on Theme or Genre

Throughout its history, Tempo Film Selection has not been confined to specific themes or genres. Each year, the selection reflects the diversity of perspectives within Indonesian cinema.

Past honorees include Garin Nugroho’s Opera Jawa (2006), Djenar Maesa Ayu’s psychologically driven Mereka Bilang, Saya Monyet (2008), and Joko Anwar’s complex thriller Pintu Terlarang (2009).

The selection has also included action films such as Gareth Evans’ The Raid, chosen in 2011, as well as comedies like Sammaria Simanjuntak’s Demi Ucok (2012).

Historical and literary dramas have also been recognized, including Yosep Anggi Noen’s Istirahatlah Kata-kata (2016), which portrays the tragic life of Indonesian poet and activist Wiji Thukul.

Festival Film Tempo continues to serve as a platform to honor Indonesian filmmakers who consistently produce meaningful and high-quality works. The event will be livestreamed on Tempo TV’s YouTube channel.
