TEMPO.CO, JakartaUniversal Pictures has released the first trailer of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, offering early glimpses of the Greek hero’s perilous journey. Adapted from the legendary saga by the ancient Greek poet Homer, this movie follows the Greek hero Odysseus’ long and arduous voyage back home after the Trojan War.

The one-minute-and-53-second trailer strikingly presents clips of Odysseus being shipwrecked, wandering across distant lands, sailing vast seas, and trekking through caves. While the visual spectacle is undoubtedly a standout, shot using brand-new IMAX film technology, it isn’t the only element capturing attention.

The cast is simply stacked, featuring Hollywood's brightest stars such as Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland. But these three aren’t just there by themselves, as they are joined by other prominent names. Who are they? Let’s discover them.

Cast and Actors in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

1. Matt Damon as Odysseus

Matt Damon takes on the titular role as the Greek hero himself. One of Hollywood’s biggest stars over the past decade, Damon has previously starred in Nolan’s Interstellar and Oppenheimer. His turn as the Greek king of Ithaca presents another challenge, as he brings to life one of the most defining figures to emerge from the Trojan War.

2. Anne Hathaway as Penelope

As Penelope plays a major role in Homer’s Odyssey, Anne Hathaway likewise takes on a central part on screen. With the king absent for ten years, Penelope and her son are placed in an increasingly precarious position, as a long line of suitors seek to claim her as a political prize. Like Matt Damon, the elite actress Hathaway has previously collaborated with Nolan in Interstellar and The Dark Knight Rises.

3. Tom Holland as Telemachus

In Nolan’s The Odyssey, Tom Holland portrays Telemachus, the son of the Greek hero Odysseus. Rather than a helpless prince, Telemachus is depicted as one who lives up to his father’s legacy, seeking the aid of the gods to find and protect him. Best known for his association with Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Odyssey marks Holland’s biggest and most prestigious project outside the superhero universe.

4. Benny Safdie as Agamemnon

Bennie Safdie joins the high-profile cast, taking on the role of Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek armies during the ten-year Trojan War. Portraying the ruthless imperial conqueror is a challenge in itself, but for the talented writer, director, and actor, it may prove to be a breeze. Safdie’s previous work includes acting roles in Happy Gilmore 2 and Oppenheimer, as well as writing and directing Uncut Gems.

5. Jon Bernthal as Menelaus

Best known for his portrayal of Shane in The Walking Dead, Jon Bernthal takes on the role of Menelaus in this project. According to ComicBook, Menelaus is the King of Sparta who is drawn into war with Troy after being dishonored by Paris, the Trojan prince.

6. Zendaya as Athena

Zendaya has a long list of prominent works under her belt, from HBO’s Euphoria to Marvel–Sony’s Spider-Man franchise and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune. This makes The Odyssey another notable addition to her résumé, as she takes on the role of Athena. The goddess of wisdom, war, and craft, Athena plays a key role in protecting Odysseus throughout his journey.

7. Charlize Theron as Circe

There are perhaps few actresses better suited to portray Circe, the goddess and sorceress known for transforming men into animals, than Charlize Theron. Her defining performances in Snow White and the Huntsman and Monster speak for how she’s truly perfect for this role.

8. Robert Pattinson as Antinous

Robert Pattinson plays Penelope’s peskiest suitor, Antinous. In Homer’s original epic, Antinous serves as the main antagonist, violating the sacred hospitality of Odysseus’ home and placing his family in grave danger. Following the reveal of Pattinson’s first look, Yahoo! noted how fans were quick to praise his suitability for the role.

9. Mia Goth as Melantho

Another character surrounding Penelope is Melantho, portrayed by Mia Goth. The actress has recently been on the rise, thanks to her iconic portrayal of the titular role in one of the scariest horror movies today, Pearl, as well as her role as Lady Elizabeth Harlander in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.

10. Mystery Roles

As remarkable as the film’s extensive cast list already is, The Odyssey also features several mystery roles whose characters have yet to be revealed. Among them are Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, and Rafi Gavron.

With its star-studded ensemble, mythological depth, and Christopher Nolan’s signature ambition behind the camera, The Odyssey is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated films in recent years. It’s slated to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, according to Yahoo!
