TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Azevedo Andovireska Adikara da Lopez had just landed at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta on Thursday, August 28, 2025, when protests in the capital erupted into chaos. Demonstrations along Jalan Gatot Subroto were the latest in a chain of protests over lawmakers’ allowance increases three days earlier.
After reading the news on his phone, the content creator—better known as Andovi da Lopez—realized the large-scale demonstrations had been triggered by the death of Affan Kurniawan. The online motorcycle taxi driver was killed after being run over by a tactical vehicle belonging to the Mobile Brigade as it pushed protesters back in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta.
The next day, Andovi joined a rally outside the House of Representatives (DPR). What began as solidarity protests for Affan in several regions turned into riots. Government offices, public facilities and toll road gates were set on fire. “I’m confused about what this movement is actually trying to achieve,” Andovi told Tempo in Tebet, South Jakarta, on Monday, December 22, 2025.
The University of Indonesia law graduate then contacted several colleagues to discuss the situation and launch an alternative movement. He first reached out to Abigail Limuria, founder of What Is Up, Indonesia, an English-language platform for young Indonesians in the diaspora, and Andhyta Firselly Utami, founder of Bijak Memantau.
Andovi also communicated with a number of influencers, including Ferry Irwandi and Cania Citta of the Malaka Project, Fathia Izzati, Jerome Polin Sijabat, Salsa Erwina, and his brother, Antonino Infloreska Jovialsra da Lopez. They agreed to form a new movement.
