The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
1. Mount Anak Krakatau Erupts Overnight, Spews Lava Fountains
The Geological Agency reported that Mount Anak Krakatau erupted overnight into Saturday, September 5, 2026. The eruptions, spewing incandescent rocks and volcanic ash, have been ongoing since July 2, when the activity status of the volcano located in the Sunda Strait was raised to Alert Level III.
In a written statement distributed by the Agency, Mount Anak Krakatau experienced a continuous eruption accompanied by rumbling sounds. "As of today, September 5, 2026, at 4:40 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, the eruption is still ongoing, and rumbling can still be heard from the Krakatau Pasauran PGA Post."
The height of the eruption column was not observed, but the bright red color of the eruption plume was clearly visible. Read more about the report here.
2. Are Indonesia's 6 Volcano Eruptions on Aug. 31 Linked? PVMBG Explains
On August 31, Mount Sinabung in Karo, North Sumatra, erupted after four years of inactivity. The eruption prompted authorities to raise the volcano's activity status by one level, from Alert Level II (Waspada) to Level III (Siaga).
However, Mount Sinabung was not the only volcano to erupt that day. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) under the Geological Agency reported six volcanic eruptions occurring almost simultaneously on August 31.
The five other volcanoes were Mount Ibu in North Maluku, Mount Lewotobi Perempuan and Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara, Mount Semeru in East Java, and Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait. Read more the complete PVMBG press conference here.
3. 615 Residents Evacuated as Mount Sinabung Eruption Threat Grows
Indonesian authorities have evacuated 615 residents from Kuta Tengah village in North Sumatra's Karo Regency as volcanic activity at Mount Sinabung intensified following a major eruption earlier this week.
Acting Head of the National Disaster Management Agency's (BNPB) Data, Information and Disaster Communication Center, Berton SP Panjaitan, said Wednesday that the evacuation was carried out as a precaution against exposure to volcanic hazards.
"Based on preliminary data, around 211 families, or 615 residents of Kuta Tengah Village, have been evacuated to the emergency response post in Sukatepu Village, Naman Teran District," Berton said in Jakarta. Read more about the evacuation here.
