TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Minister of Trade Thomas Trikasih Lembong, also known as Tom Lembong, through his legal representative Ari Yusuf Amir, expressed appreciation for the government and House of Representatives' decision to grant abolition or to stop the investigation and examination. "We must appreciate the state's concern for law enforcement in this country," said Ari on Thursday night, July 31, 2025.
Ari stated that, after the House of Representatives approved the abolition, his client is now waiting for the presidential decision to be issued. He considered the granting of this abolition as a form of the state's presence. "The public directly feels that there is a problem with the legal process in Pak Tom Lembong's case," said Ari.
He also expressed his appreciation to Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, whom he considered to have taken the legal case against his client seriously. Dasco, who is also the Daily Chairperson of the Gerindra Central Board, announced the granting of the abolition for Tom Lembong along with Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas on Thursday at 9 PM. It was mentioned that the granting of the abolition was a continuation of the request letter submitted by President Prabowo Subianto to the House, which was then approved.
Supratman said he submitted the proposal to grant Tom Lembong abolition to President Prabowo. He said that with the granting of abolition, the entire legal process against Tom Lembong—who was also a former member of the presidential and vice-presidential candidates Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar's campaign team—has stopped. It is now waiting for the president's follow-up decision.
Tom Lembong was previously sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison at the first-level court. This former minister of trade in President Joko Widodo's cabinet was found guilty of committing corruption that resulted in state financial losses amounting to Rp194.72 billion. However, the decision sparked controversy because although he was found guilty, the panel of judges stated that it was not proven that Tom Lembong received personal gain.
