TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump proposed renaming artificial intelligence as “super intelligence” in U.S. government documents during his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, September 23.
Trump said the term “artificial intelligence” makes the technology sound fake and suggested that the United States, and eventually other countries, adopt the new terminology.
“The use of the word artificial makes intelligence sound fake,” Trump said, as reported live by BBC. “It is not fake. It’s actually amazing. But we have to be careful.”
“From this point forward, all of United States documents and hopefully the world’s will be changed to use the much more accurate term super as opposed to artificial,” he added.
Trump then introduced the abbreviation “S.I.” for the proposed term.
“In other words, welcome to the new world of super intelligence – S.I.,” he said, as quoted by The Hill. “Let’s see if that goes. It sounds much better. It is much better, and it’s much more accurate.”
Superintelligence is already used in the AI field to describe a hypothetical form of artificial intelligence that surpasses human intellectual capabilities. It is often discussed as a potential long-term goal of advanced AI development, as well as a source of concern among researchers and others who warn about the risks posed by increasingly capable systems.
Trump’s remarks came as AI development and regulation remain major issues in Washington and internationally. He has previously argued that the country that wins the AI race will gain a significant advantage and has pushed back against regulations that he says could hinder U.S. technological development.
His approach has drawn debate among governments and policymakers weighing how to regulate rapidly developing AI technology while maintaining competitiveness.
The Hill mentioned that AI is also expected to feature prominently in diplomatic discussions this week, including at the UN General Assembly and during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned state visit to Washington.
