TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump said on Saturday, June 20, 2026, that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would remain free during the 60-day ceasefire and beyond.
However, the US leader did not rule out the possibility that the United States could impose fees for use of the waterway in the future.
"There will be NO TOLLS in the Hormuz Strait for 60 days during the Cease Fire Period, and there will be NO TOLLS after the 60 day period has expired," Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform.
However, the US leader added that if a peace deal with Iran ultimately fails, the United States could impose fees as "reward for services rendered" and to cover costs already incurred.
Iran will close the Strait of Hormuz to shipping in response to the United States' violation of the peace memorandum and the continued Israeli attacks on Lebanon, according to an Iranian military statement on Saturday, June 20.
The Iranian military has accused the US of violating the peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) by failing to implement the first clause of the agreement, which stipulates a ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon.
"In light of the US's flagrant violation of its promises and failure to implement the first clause of the MoU to end the war, and in response to Israel's continued violations of the ceasefire in southern Lebanon," the Khatam Al-Anbiya Headquarters said, as quoted by Iranian state TV, IRIB.
"The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is hereby announced," the Iranian armed forces headquarters said.
