TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump on Monday, December 1, 2025, warned Israel against actions that could destabilize Syria and its new leadership. The warning came just days after a deadly Israeli military operation in southern Syria.
“It is very important that Israel maintain a strong and true dialogue with Syria, and that nothing takes place that will interfere with Syria’s evolution into a prosperous State,” Trump said on his social media platform, Truth Social, as quoted by Al Arabiya.
Shortly after the statement, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that he had spoken with Trump by phone.
According to the readout, Trump expressed satisfaction with the performance of Syria’s new president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, who made a historic visit to the White House in November.
Trump has been pushing for a security pact between Israel and Syria since al-Sharaa’s coalition ousted longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad last year. However, tensions have risen as Israel continues to launch strikes inside Syria.
In its deadliest assault to date, Israeli forces killed 13 people on Friday during an operation in southern Syria, saying they were targeting a militant group.
Trump said al-Sharaa “is working hard to ensure that good things happen” and insisted that Syria and Israel could build a “long and prosperous relationship.”
He added that the United States is committed to supporting Syria’s reconstruction following more than a decade of war.
A stable ties between Syria and Israel, he said, would also bolster broader Middle East peace efforts after the Gaza ceasefire in October.
Netanyahu’s office later said that in the same call, the two leaders discussed the disarmament of Hamas and the future demilitarization of the Gaza Strip. They also spoke about Israel’s push to establish ties with countries that still do not recognize it. Trump invited Netanyahu to visit the White House in the near future.
