TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations (UN) has condemned the "summary execution" by Israeli border police of two Palestinians in Jenin, the West Bank. Video footage on social media shows both individuals raising their hands in surrender before being shot dead.

"We’re appalled by the brazen killing by Israeli border police yesterday of two Palestinian men in Jenin in the occupied West Bank in yet another apparent summary execution," said Jeremy Laurence, a spokesperson for the UN human rights office in a briefing in Geneva on Friday, as reported by Arab News.

The killings took place on Thursday in an Israeli raid on the northern West Bank city of Jenin, an area that has seen escalating violence since the Gaza genocide and repeated Israeli operations.

This incident adds to the surge of Palestinian deaths in the occupied territory where, according to UN data, over a thousand Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers since late 2023, as reported by France 24.

Videos broadcasted on Palestine TV, Al-Ghad, and other Arab media recorded the final moments of the two men. The recordings show them leaving a garage with their hands raised, lifting their shirts to show they were unarmed.

They were instructed to lie on the ground, kicked by an officer, and then ordered back to the garage entrance. As they were surrounded by Israeli forces, the sound of gunfire was heard and both of them collapse, apparently lifeless.

At least one Israeli soldier is seen firing his weapon.

The Palestinian authorities identified the victims as Yussef Ali Asa'sa (37 years old) and Al-Muntasir Billah Mahmud Abdullah (26 years old). They condemned the killings of the two victims as "brutal" and a "war crime."

The Palestinian authorities stated that their bodies were held by Israeli forces.

Jenin Governor Kamal Abu al-Rub told Anadolu that Israeli forces "

The Israeli military and police admitted the incident and announced a joint investigation.

Their statement claimed that the forces had attempted to apprehend "wanted individuals." They were alleged to be linked to a "terrorist network" involved in throwing explosives and shooting at security forces, although no evidence was provided to support these claims.

Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who supervises the Border Police in the West Bank, openly backed the involved forces. "The fighters acted exactly as expected of them — terrorists should die!" he wrote on X.

Spokesperson Laurence said the UN was "appalled" by the killing and labeled it as "yet another apparent summary execution."

He added that UN's head of human rights, Volker Turk, demanded an independent, prompt, and effective investigation to ensure accountability. He cautioned that statements like those made by Ben-Gvir raise concerns about the credibility of the investigation led by the Israeli authorities.

During the same period, 44 Israelis were killed in Palestinian attacks or military operations.

On Wednesday, the Israeli military launched a massive operation in the occupied northern West Bank, particularly in the provinces of Jenin and Tubas.

In addition to the two-year genocide in Gaza, which has killed nearly 70,000 people, attacks by Israeli soldiers and illegal settlers in the West Bank have killed at least 1,083 Palestinians, including 223 children.

Their attacks have also injured around 11,000 Palestinians in the West Bank, while over 20,500 people have been detained, according to official Palestinian data.

In a landmark ruling last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
