TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli settlers in the West Bank have reportedly beaten an American citizen to death, according to the victim's family and human rights groups. The victim, Seif al-Din Muslat, was in his early 20s.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health said Muslat was attacked and killed by settlers in the town of Sinjil, north of Ramallah, on Friday, July 11, 2025. His family, who are from Tampa, Florida, confirmed that he died from the beating.
“We are aware of reports of the death of a US citizen in the West Bank,” a US State Department spokesperson told Al Jazeera. The official declined to provide further details, citing respect for the victim’s family.
Muslat had traveled from Florida to visit relatives in Palestine, according to his cousin Fatmah Muhammad, who posted about the incident on social media.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health also reported that another individual, Mohammed Shalabi, was shot and killed by settlers during the same attack.
Human rights groups have long documented violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, including the destruction of Palestinian homes and vehicles. The Israeli military is often seen protecting settlers during such assaults and firing on Palestinians who resist.
International bodies, including the United Nations and major human rights organizations, regard Israeli settlements in the West Bank as illegal under international law. These settlements are part of what many observers describe as an effort to displace Palestinians from the area.
Countries such as France and Australia have imposed sanctions on settlers involved in violence. Attacks have become more frequent since the start of the Israel-Gaza war in October 2023.
The US State Department has not commented further on Muslat’s death.
Hamas condemned the killing, calling it a “heinous crime,” and urged Palestinians in the West Bank to confront settler violence. The Israeli government said it is investigating the incident in Sinjil and claimed the violence began after Palestinians threw stones at Israeli vehicles.
