TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said it has completed its latest military operation against Iran, targeting several sites along the country’s southern coast in an effort to weaken Tehran’s ability to disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM said the operation was carried out on Monday night, July 13, 2026, with the assault lasting five hours.
"U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) completed the latest wave of strikes against Iran at 10:15 p.m. ET on July 13," CENTCOM said in a statement posted on X, as cited by Anadolu.
The US military said its forces struck several locations, including Bushehr, Chabahar, Jaskh, Abu Musa, and Bandar Abbas.
According to CENTCOM, the strikes used precision-guided munitions (PGM) to target coastal defense systems, missile and drone facilities, and Iranian maritime assets.
More than 50,000 US military personnel are currently deployed across various locations in the Middle East and remain on heightened alert, according to the command.
The operation marked the third consecutive US military action against Iran ordered by President Donald Trump.
Trump said the campaign was aimed at degrading Iran’s military capabilities linked to the Strait of Hormuz and restoring a blockade against the country.
Iran Retaliates Against US Bases, Tankers in Gulf Region
Iran responded with strikes targeting US military facilities in the region, including Bahrain, as well as two oil tankers linked to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Euronews.
The UAE Ministry of Defense said on Tuesday, July 14, that the attacks killed one sailor and injured eight others. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the strikes on the two vessels.
The IRGC said the attacks were carried out after the ships ignored warnings issued by Iranian forces.
Iranian military authorities also claimed to have launched missile and drone attacks against Manama, Bahrain.
"Several weapons support warehouses, a satellite communications center and the residential building for US forces in Bahrain were targeted," the IRGC said in a statement broadcast by Iranian state television channel IRIB.
Strait of Hormuz Tensions Threaten Fragile Truce
The latest exchange of attacks came amid growing tensions over control of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes that transports around one-fifth of global oil supplies.
Trump previously said the United States would impose a 20 percent fee on ships passing through the strait, despite earlier indicating such a measure would not be implemented.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the US would act as the "Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz," arguing that Washington should be compensated for protecting the strategic waterway.
"We’re protecting a very rich portion of the world. We’re spending money. And so, what we’ve done is, we are going to be reimbursed for protection," Trump wrote.
Despite the escalation, Trump said diplomatic efforts with Tehran remained possible.
"Yeah, I think a deal is possible. Sure, I do," Trump told reporters at the Oval Office.
He claimed both sides had been close to reaching an agreement two days earlier but said Iran had asked for more time to continue negotiations.
In an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Monday, Trump said the agreement drafted in June was intended to test Iran’s commitment and accused Tehran of failing to uphold the arrangement.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the memorandum of understanding reached in June was becoming increasingly fragile.
"As the basis for negotiations and the lifting of the US blockade, the peaceful memorandum of understanding is now in a crisis state," Baghaei said.
The White House also confirmed that Trump had formally notified Congress last week about the continuation of US military operations against Iran.
The notification gives the Pentagon an additional 60-day authorization to conduct operations in the region without requiring further approval from Congress.
