TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Typhoon Kalmaegi is currently on a dangerous trajectory toward Vietnam after leaving a trail of destruction in the Philippines. The storm has tragically claimed at least 114 lives in the archipelago, with another 127 people still missing.

In response to the disaster, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared a state of emergency and issued a grim warning about the potential threat of yet another incoming super typhoon.

Meteorological experts at the United States Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) report that Kalmaegi has regained significant strength as it closes in on Vietnam's central coast.

As of Thursday morning at 10:00 AM local time, the JTWC confirmed the typhoon is moving toward the coast and reaching its peak intensity.

The JTWC, quoted by Al Jazeera, stated, "Typhoon Kalmaegi will continue to swiftly move and hit the Vietnamese coast just north of the city of Quy Nhon in central Vietnam."

Known locally as Tino, the typhoon severely impacted a large portion of the Philippines, traversing eight regions in the central part of the country on Tuesday. It marks the deadliest natural disaster to strike the Southeast Asian archipelago this year.

Vietnam Prepares for Landfall

As Typhoon Kalmaegi crosses the South China Sea, Vietnamese authorities are mobilizing in anticipation of its Thursday landfall.

Thousands of Vietnamese troops have been deployed to assist in the evacuation of approximately 350,000 people in the central highlands province of Gia Lai.

Heavy rains and powerful winds are forecast for several central provinces. Authorities have issued warnings about the storm's potential to trigger severe flooding in low-lying areas and to disrupt crucial economic activities, including the main coffee harvest currently underway.

Vietnam's aviation authorities have also cautioned that operations at eight airports, including the major international airport in Da Nang, are likely to face significant disruption.
