What to Know About Garuda Indonesia's New Baggage Policy

1 day ago 22

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has overhauled its baggage policy for passengers based on flight routes and cabin classes. The new system transitions to a "piece concept" framework, which grants travelers an additional baggage allowance of up to 64 kilograms.

Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills stated that this new regulation applies to tickets issued from September 1, 2026, onward. "The implementation of the piece concept is part of Garuda Indonesia's transformation to modernize its services and provide better certainty for passengers. With clearer guidelines on the number of pieces and maximum weight limits, travelers can organize their carry-on items more easily," Mills said on Monday, July 13, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Under this scheme, Garuda provides clear parameters on the allowable number and maximum weight of each checked bag. The policy is designed to boost passenger benefits by offering a more substantial baggage allocation than previous regulations permitted.

He noted that passengers holding tickets issued before September 1, 2026, will remain subject to the original baggage allowances printed on their tickets, even if their travel dates fall after the new policy takes effect.

For domestic routes, Economy Class passengers are entitled to a single checked bag weighing up to 23 kilograms. Meanwhile, Business and First Class travelers are allocated two pieces of luggage weighing up to 32 kilograms each, bringing their potential total allowance up to 64 kilograms.

On international flights, Economy Class passengers are allowed two pieces of checked luggage at a maximum of 23 kilograms each, totaling 46 kilograms. Business and First Class users receive two bags weighing up to 32 kilograms each, allowing for a combined weight of up to 64 kilograms.

Compared to the outgoing policy, the shift to the piece concept boosts baggage allowances across multiple flight tiers. According to Mills, domestic Economy Class allowances will rise from 20 to 23 kilograms, Business Class from 30 to 64 kilograms, and First Class from 40 to 64 kilograms.

Meanwhile, international Economy Class baggage limits will increase from 30 kilograms to 46 kilograms. Similarly, Business Class will jump from 40 to 64 kilograms, while First Class allowances will expand from 50 to 64 kilograms.

With these adjustments, travelers can enjoy an overall baggage increase of up to 34 kilograms compared to previous limits, provided they comply with the stipulated piece count and individual weight ceilings.

Mills emphasized that adopting this system is a strategic effort by Garuda Indonesia to harmonize service standards across its domestic and international flight networks.

"The piece concept has been widely used in the global aviation industry. Its rollout at Garuda Indonesia is expected to standardize our operations, streamline baggage handling, and offer greater clarity to our passengers, particularly those connecting across international networks," he said.
