What Triggered the M 8.7 Earthquake in Russia?

1 month ago 23

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An 8.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the eastern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the trigger for this earthquake originated from the subduction activity of plates in the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) reported that several regions, including Russia, Japan, Alaska, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Guam, were potentially at risk of tsunamis due to the earthquake. For the Indonesian region, the BMKG has issued a cautionary status due to the potential tsunamis reaching a wave height of less than 0.5 meters.

The Head of the National Disaster Management Agency's Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, urged the public to remain cautious even though the potential tsunami height is relatively low. "Although small, a tsunami of that height can be deadly. We have the experience of the 2011 incident in Papua, where there was one casualty despite the detected wave height only being 33 centimeters," he said as quoted by Antara on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

The BMKG predicts that there are ten regions in Indonesia potentially affected by the tsunami, namely Talaud, Gorontalo City, North Halmahera, Manokwari, Raja Ampat, Biak Numfor, Supiori, Northern Sorong, Jayapura, and Sarmi.

The Head of BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, explained that the characteristics of the coast, especially those resembling bays or narrow coves, can strengthen tsunami waves, so the potential local impact still needs to be anticipated. "We continuously monitor the situation in real-time and update information if there are significant developments," he said.

As of 4:30 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time), the BMKG reported 43 aftershocks, with the largest magnitude reaching 6.9. Previously, the BMKG had noted a rise in sea levels on the eastern coast of Indonesia due to tectonic activity.

"An increase in sea levels was detected at several points along the Indonesian coast, ranging from 0.05 to 0.2 meters. This condition indicates that the tsunami energy from the Russian earthquake has spread to Indonesian waters, although not significantly," he said.

The earthquake that occurred in the eastern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula is recorded as the sixth strongest earthquake in history. The resulting effects are enormous, triggering the issuance of tsunami warnings throughout the Pacific region. Experts mentioned that this earthquake occurred on a megathrust fault, similar to the earthquake that occurred in Japan in 2011.
