TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yogyakarta has provided financial aid to help cover living expenses for thousands of students affected by floods in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh. According to data from the Yogyakarta Regional Government, approximately 1,296 students affected by the disaster are currently studying in Yogyakarta.
Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X stated that the extension of living cost aid aims to ensure that no students are disrupted in their learning process and that they can continue their studies without any interruptions. "So that they (the students) can stay focused (on their studies)," said the Sultan on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
Sultan mentioned that the economic recovery in the students' hometowns is still ongoing. It is estimated that the parents of these students are currently rearranging their economic situation.
"Therefore, we must ensure that the students do not drop out of their studies simply because their parents are unable to provide financial support," Sultan added.
Regarding the extension of living cost aid, it is being carried out through a relay funding scheme between the banking sector and the Yogyakarta Regional Government. The Regional Government has discussed this additional cost policy with the Regional Banking Forum (BMPD) and the Financial Services Industry Communication Forum (FKIJK) on Tuesday.
At this stage, the banking sector, which is part of BMPD and FKIJK, has injected an additional fund of Rp500 million. This fund is projected to cover the living costs of affected students for the next one and a half months, until assistance is fully provided through the Yogyakarta regional government budget.
"The aid will be continued by the Yogyakarta Regional Government for six months, with the hope that within that period, the parents of the students will be able to support their children's living costs again,"
"The most crucial thing is that the students receive living cost aid to ease the burden on their parents," added Sultan.
Each student identified will receive aid of approximately Rp300,000 per month, which will be distributed through student groups under the management of the Yogyakarta Regional Government-owned Bank BPD DIY.
Sri Darmadi Sudibyo, the Head of the Bank Indonesia (BI) Yogyakarta Representative Office, stated that the distribution of living cost aid follows the same mechanism as previously implemented through the Yogyakarta Regional Government bank.
"This aid program is a continuation of the first phase, which was initially planned to run for six months," he said.
