TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The long weekend coinciding with the commemoration of the Isra' Mi'raj of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, from January 15 to 19, 2026, is characterized by an increased potential for rainfall and high waves along the south coast of Yogyakarta. Due to the extreme weather conditions at the beginning of this year, travelers planning to go on vacation are advised to remain cautious.
Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Yogyakarta stated that Tropical Cyclone Seed 91W is currently observed north of Papua and a cyclonic pattern south of Bali-Nusa Tenggara. "The cyclone condition forms a convergence pattern (wind meeting area) along the Java island, thus increasing the potential for rain cloud growth in most parts of the Java Island, specifically in Yogyakarta until this Saturday," said the Head of the Yogyakarta BMKG Meteorology Station, Warjono, on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
Rainfall accompanied by strong winds has repeatedly occurred throughout early January, affecting five regencies/cities in Yogyakarta. The most recent incident happened on Monday, January 12, 2026, where heavy rain accompanied by strong winds wreaked havoc on the night market stalls in the Godean area, Sleman. Additionally, on the same day, a middle-aged woman in Kalibawang Kulon Progo was reported to have died with burn injuries in the rice fields, suspected of being struck by lightning.
Warjono continued, in addition to the extreme weather, there is also potential for high waves in the southern waters of Yogyakarta in the moderate category. "Waves with a height of 1.25 - 2.5 meters are likely to occur in the waters south of Kulonprogo, Bantul, and Gunungkidul regencies, bordering the Indian Ocean," he said.
Furthermore, PT. KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta is providing additional trains during this long Isra' Mi'raj weekend. The Public Relations Manager of KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta, Feni Novida Saragih, mentioned that the additional trains are available for both economy and executive classes.
The additional trains provided include the YK-GMR Train (7037) from Yogyakarta Station to Gambir Station departing at 6:20 PM, Sancaka Train (88F) from Yogyakarta Station to Surabaya Gubeng departing at 10:25 PM, Batavia Train (7005) from Solo Balapan Station to Gambir Station departing at 10:56 PM, and Additional Gajayana Train (7002/7001) from Malang Station to Gambir Station round trip.
"We also invite the public to plan their departure time from home or lodging to the station in order to avoid being too rushed and missing the train," he said.
