Yogyakarta Student Protest Held in Gejayan Today

2 hours ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A group of students and civil society will hold a rally to protest the government of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka at the intersection of Gejayan, Depok, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta on Saturday afternoon, June 13, 2026.

The Gejayan intersection has been the gathering point for various civil society movements in Yogyakarta since the 1998 Reform. The tradition of protests has continued through the years through the Gejayan Calling Movement. This year, the masses from the People's Alliance of Calling, similar to the movement, take to the streets again. In addition to speeches, they will hold theatrical performances and poetry readings.

People's Call Alliance consists of a fluid mass without a formal organizational structure. The Chair of the Student Union of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta, the transformation of the Executive Board of UGM Students, Mesa, said that the consolidation of actions took place in several locations. At UGM, the consolidation took place at the canteen of the Faculty of Philosophy UGM, also known as Bonbin UGM, on Friday, June 12, 2026.

Mesa said that about a hundred students from different UGM faculties came together to discuss the details of the protest. They will depart from the UGM Roundabout and walk to the Gejayan intersection, which is three kilometers away.

People's Call Alliance formulated various demands in the protest. They demanded that the Prabowo-Gibran Government stop the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) project, which is prone to corruption, and the Red-and-White Village Cooperative, which deviates from the principles of the people's economy. They also urged the revocation of the Indonesian National Army Law and the Police Law.

The Alliance also emphasized the importance of protecting freedom of expression, assembly, and association. Other demands include free education and healthcare, economic welfare restoration, labor rights protection, and lower prices for staple foods and non-subsidized fuel. "Economic pressure and various problematic government projects associated with corruption are uniting the movement," Mesa said on Saturday, June 13, 2026.

The Cik Di Tiro Forum, a non-partisan civil society movement, is also involved in the People's Call Alliance protest. They consolidated with civil society networks the day before at a different location. A representative of the forum, Rachma, said that the increase in the price of non-subsidized fuel and the depreciation of the rupiah exchange rate had united cross-sector networks, from students, workers, to household staff. "The worsening social and political situation is becoming increasingly urgent," Rachma said.
