TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Director of PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, Joao Angelo De Sousa Mota, stated that the 4x4 pickups imported from India are intended for 70,000 Red and White Village Cooperatives. A total of 35,000 units were purchased from Mahindra & Mahindra, while the other 35,000 units were purchased from Tata Motors India.
Joao mentioned that the availability of 4x4 pickups is necessary for farmers to transport agricultural products to the market. Initially, he questioned why Red and White Village Cooperatives should have vehicles. "But after I tried to understand, it turns out that the President's wish is to connect farmers directly with consumers, resulting in fair prices," he said at a press conference at the Agrinas Pangan office in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
On the other hand, Joao stated that the price of 4x4 pickups domestically is quite high. In fact, the price in e-catalogs can reach Rp528 million per unit. He says that this price does not match farmers' limited income.
Therefore, Joao explained that farmers are forced to use 4x2 pickups as an alternative vehicle. "Even if for now we use 4x2 because the price of 4x4 in Indonesia is exorbitant, it's almost unreasonable," he said.
Due to the high price, Agrinas decided to import pickup trucks from India. Furthermore, Joao mentioned that the imported vehicles have a larger loading capacity, reaching up to 1.2 tons.
He also pointed out the limitations of domestic production. The production of 4x2 pickups only reaches around 120,000 units, some of which have been allocated to the free nutritious meal program (MBG).
Joao stated that Agrinas has built 30,712 Red and White Village Cooperative outlets, 1,357 of which will soon be operational. He claimed that purchasing vehicles from India enabled Agrinas to save up to Rp46.5 trillion. Agrinas itself received a fund injection of Rp200 trillion from the HIMBARA bank for the development of Red and White Village Cooperatives. "Then until today, maybe we have spent around Rp90 trillion," Joao said.
