TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A temporary military observer team from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has inspected conflict-affected areas along the Cambodia-Thailand border after a ceasefire was established, as confirmed by a Cambodian defense spokesperson on Sunday, August 3, 2025.

The team, comprising representatives from Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam, is led by Colonel Nazlee bin Abdul Rahim, the Malaysian Defense Attaché to Cambodia. They traveled from Phnom Penh to the Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear Provinces, regions that have recently experienced armed clashes between the Cambodian and Thai militaries.

Their primary mission is to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached on July 28, with a designated observation period spanning two full weeks.

"Cambodia stands ready to cooperate with the observation group led by Malaysia to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire," stated Maly Socheata, Deputy Minister of Interior and Spokesperson for the Cambodian Ministry of Defense, as reported by ANN on Monday, August 4, 2025.

This deployment follows a special meeting held in Malaysia on July 28, 2025, which concluded with a mutual agreement to cease hostilities. The active participation of these partner countries reflects a shared aspiration to ensure the success and durability of peace efforts, aiming to restore stability, foster cooperation, and promote development for the populations of both nations.

The Cambodian government reaffirms its ongoing cooperation and dedication to regional peace and stability, welcoming this initiative as a crucial step toward easing tensions and enhancing diplomatic relations across Southeast Asia.

Details regarding the mission were also conveyed to the Defense Attaché Office at the Royal Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.

This coordinated regional initiative highlights the continuous efforts of Southeast Asian countries to uphold peace and stability, emphasizing the vital role of international cooperation in resolving conflicts.

The recent armed clashes between the Cambodian and Thai armies erupted on July 24 in the border area. Both countries subsequently agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire on July 28, which commenced at midnight on that day.
