TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), Dadan Hindayana, urges higher education institutions to establish a Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) or a free nutritious meal (MBG) kitchen. Dadan emphasizes that campuses have a strategic role in supporting the success of President Prabowo Subianto's priority program.
Therefore, Dadan requests that campuses independently establish and manage the SPPG, turning it into a practice-based learning center in the process.
"I believe that campuses need to understand this because it's a significant opportunity. At the very least, start with one SPPG, and if possible, the supply should come from the academic community itself," said Dadan during the U25 Forum of State Universities Legal Entity (PTN-BH) in Makassar, Tuesday, April 28, 2026, as quoted from the press release.
Dadan argues that the substantial need for food production in the MBG program could be an opportunity for universities to integrate academic and field practice activities. He explains that each SPPG requires substantial support for food production. For example, meeting the needs of one SPPG requires at least eight hectares of paddy fields for rice and around 19 hectares of cornfields for animal feed.
Additionally, in the livestock sector, one SPPG requires approximately 4,000 laying hens to ensure daily availability of animal protein. "If you want the eggs to be self-supplied, there should be around 3,700 to 4,000 laying hens for one SPPG," Dadan added.
By having SPPG, Dadan continues, students can directly participate in the management of agriculture, livestock, and food distribution as part of real project-based learning processes. Consequently, Dadan suggests that SPPG could become a living laboratory where universities can develop research and innovation projects. This could include everything from agricultural technology and food processing to supply chain management.
"This SPPG becomes the foremost off-taker for local products. So, it's not just about providing food but also creating a sustainable economic ecosystem," Dadan stated.
