TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) ended the tsunami early warning following the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the southwest coast of Batang Dua Island in Ternate, North Maluku, on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at 5:48:14 AM WIB (Western Indonesia Time).
"Considering the current conditions related to observations in several affected areas, there is no significant increase in sea levels that poses a danger. Therefore, the tsunami early warning is declared over at 09.56 WIB," said BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani at a press conference at the BMKG office held offline and online, on Thursday.
As of 09.50 WIB, BMKG monitoring results show 48 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 3 to 5.5, and two felt earthquakes.
Teuku Faisal added that, after termination, search and rescue teams from the local disaster management agency, as well as teams responsible for building assessments, can enter tsunami-affected locations. BMKG recorded that several coastal areas experienced increased sea levels due to the tsunami, including up to 0.75 meters in North Minahasa.
Previously, BMKG reported a tectonic earthquake that rocked the southwest coast of Batang Dua Island, Ternate, North Maluku, on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at 05.48.14 WIB. BMKG's analysis indicates that this earthquake has been updated to a magnitude of 7.6.
The earthquake's epicenter was located at coordinates 1.25 N and 126.27 E, or precisely in the sea at a distance of 129 kilometers southeast of Bitung, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 33 kilometers.
"Considering the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, this earthquake is a shallow earthquake due to the deformation activity of the earth's crust. The source mechanism analysis results indicate that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism," said the Acting Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, Rahmat Triyono, on Thursday.
The earthquake was felt in Ternate City with an intensity of V-VI on MMI scale, meaning the tremors were felt by all residents. Most were startled and ran outside, plaster fell off the walls, and factory chimneys were damaged, causing minor damage.
In Ibu, the earthquake was felt with intensity V MMI, meaning the vibrations were felt by almost all residents, and many people were awakened. In Manado, the earthquake was felt with intensity IV-V MMI, meaning the vibrations were felt by almost all residents, and many people were awakened. In Gorontalo Bone Bolango, North Gorontalo, the earthquake was felt with intensity III MMI, indicating noticeable vibrations inside houses, as if a truck was passing by.
In the Boalemo and Pohuwato Regencies, the earthquake was felt with intensity II-III MMI, meaning the tremors were felt by several people, and light hanging objects swayed.
Modeling results indicate that this earthquake has the potential for a tsunami with an Alert status in Ternate City, Halmahera, Tidore City, Bitung City, the southern part of South Minahasa, the southern part of South Minahasa, the southern part of North Minahasa, and a Caution status in the Sangihe Islands, the northern part of North Minahasa, and the southern part of Bolaangmongondow.
