ByteDance Still Negotiating with US Over TikTok's Fate

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - ByteDance stated that it is still in discussions with the United States (US) Government regarding the continuation of TikTok operations in the Land of Uncle Sam. The short video application can still operate for the next 75 days as its ban has been postponed by the federal government.

"There are several important things that need to be resolved," as stated in ByteDance's official statement, quoted on Sunday, April 6, 2025.

In the statement, ByteDance ensured that there is no new agreement reached. However, the management promised that all decisions to be made will not deviate from the provisions in China, the home country of TikTok.

The Federal Government will only allow TikTok to operate in the United States if its umbrella entity is sold to non-Chinese investors. This postponement is the second after January 20 and April 5. The new deadline for TikTok is June 19, 2025.

A new report in the Washington Post suggested that the TikTok deal with China is almost final. The decision is thought to be disturbed by the US trade tariff policy to many countries, including China, recently imposed by US President Donald Trump.

A day before the TikTok ban took effect, Trump claimed that his administration had worked very hard to reach an agreement in order for TikTok operations to continue. "And we have made tremendous progress," as stated in his upload on TruthSocial, as quoted by Mashable on April 4.

Trump had previously mentioned about four business groups that he believed were equally good and interested in buying TikTok. However, he could not confirm the continuation of the transaction for the vertical video service.
