TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake impacted the Solok regency and city in West Sumatra this Tuesday evening, April 8, 2025. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the event with a magnitude of 4.2.
The seismic activity, which occurred precisely at 5:23 PM Western Indonesia Time (WIB), had its epicenter on land, approximately 20 kilometers southeast of Solok regency. Preliminary data from the BMKG indicated a hypocenter at a depth of only one kilometer.
"This shallow earthquake was caused by the activity of the Suliti Fault," explained Suaidi Ahadi, Head of the Padang Panjang Geophysics Station, in a statement released following the event.
The Suliti Fault is a segment of the major Great Sumatran Fault system situated in the West Sumatra province.
The intensity of the ground motion resulting from this shallow inland earthquake was measured at III-IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in both Solok Regency and Solok City. A level III MMI means that the vibrations were noticeable indoors, akin to the passing of a truck or a heavy vehicle.
Meanwhile, a level IV MMI suggests an earthquake that is felt by numerous individuals indoors and has the potential to cause the rattling of doors and windows.
According to BMKG records, the Solok earthquake was the second seismic event within Indonesian territory today. Earlier in the day, a magnitude of 5.9 struck the Simeulue regency of Aceh, also registering at an intensity of III-IV MMI.
