TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Wednesday asked United States President Donald Trump not to interfere in the country's presidential election campaign several days before the vote.
As reported by ANTARA, Petro made this statement in response to Trump's support for right-wing Colombian presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, a candidate who holds dual Colombian and U.S. citizenship.
He will face Ivan Cepeda, who is part of the ruling Historic Pact coalition, in the general election on June 21. In a post on X, Petro said Colombian law prohibits foreign interference in elections and warned against attempts to influence public opinion through foreign funding or disinformation campaigns.
"I inform President Donald Trump that Colombia's Constitution prohibits foreign support and foreign money," Petro wrote, adding that any attempt to influence voters' choices by using resources from abroad is illegal.
"I ask you, as president of Colombia, not to interfere in the campaign that the Colombian people, not you, will freely decide. Whoever wins will maintain the friendship of more than two centuries between Colombia and the United States," Petro said.
