Cross-Border Payments Grow as Indonesia's QRIS Launches in South Korea

6 hours ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Bank of Korea have launched the Indonesia-South Korea Cross-Border QR. Consequently, Indonesian citizens can use the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) to conduct transactions through domestic applications, eliminating the need to exchange foreign currency.

BI Governor Perry Warjiyo stated that the launch is a significant step toward realizing Indonesia and South Korea's joint vision of building an integrated, efficient, and inclusive payment system as the foundation for digital economic connectivity between the two countries. "The cross-border QR payment not only facilitates transactions but also strengthens SMEs, enhances tourism, and opens up new opportunities for businesses, thereby supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth," Perry said in an official statement on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

According to Perry, cross-border QR transactions can be conducted directly in the local currency, making them more efficient and cost-effective. The initiative is part of the Joint Vision Statement between President Prabowo Subianto and President Lee Jae Myung signed in South Korea.

As of February 2026, Bank Indonesia has recorded 60.77 million QRIS users since its launch. In 2025, the number of inbound transactions, or foreign tourists making transactions in Indonesia, reached 5,892,621, surpassing the number of outbound transactions, or Indonesian citizens making transactions abroad, which totaled 1,681,112.

In addition to South Korea, QRIS can also be used in several other countries. As of February 2026, the cooperation with Thailand, which began in August 2022, has recorded 1.64 million transactions totaling Rp656.27 billion. Meanwhile, the cooperation with Malaysia, which started in May 2023, has recorded 10.66 million transactions totaling Rp2.75 trillion.

Furthermore, the Indonesia-Singapore Cross-Border QR launched in November 2023 has recorded 554,510 transactions amounting to Rp179.28 billion. Meanwhile, the cooperation with Japan, which began in August 2025, has recorded 5,088 transactions totaling Rp428.80 million.
