TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cuban delegates left the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) hall on Tuesday morning, September 22, as U.S. President Donald Trump spoke about Cuba during his address to the 81st UNGA session.
Video footage showed several Cuban delegates standing and leaving their seats in protest after Trump described Cuba as a “failed state.”
Trump said his administration was “seeking a fundamental change in the situation in Cuba,” while accusing the island nation of maintaining “ties to subversive and radical groups.”
He also said U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was handling negotiations with Cuba.
The United States has escalated pressure and sanctions on Cuba since late January, while bilateral relations between the two countries have remained strained for decades.
Following U.S. military actions against Venezuela and Iran earlier this year, Trump threatened that “Cuba is next,” while enforcing an oil blockade and intensifying a long-standing embargo aimed at cutting off the island nation’s economic lifelines.
