TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump held talks with Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York on Tuesday, September 22, marking their first direct encounter since the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
“We held a historic meeting with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, during which we discussed strengthening the bilateral relationship between our countries and advancing a cooperation agenda in strategic areas such as energy, mining, security and other matters of mutual interest,” Rodriguez said on X, as quoted by Xinhua.
Rodriguez also expressed appreciation to the U.S. administration for its “steadfast support” following the earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24. She thanked Washington for assisting Caracas with its “reintegration into multilateral forums.”
She said Caracas and Washington share a historic connection that both sides are now “called upon to steer through dialogue.”
Rodriguez also affirmed her administration’s commitment to diplomacy focused on “achieving concrete results and collective benefits for the Venezuelan people.”
Trump-Rodriguez Meeting
According to a White House background disclosure, the informal meeting also involved U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller.
The United States did not immediately issue an official joint readout or formal statement following the talks.
The meeting marked the first direct interaction between Trump and Rodriguez since a U.S. military operation captured Maduro during a raid in Caracas on January 3, according to the account provided by the parties.
Maduro was subsequently flown to New York to face federal U.S. narcotics charges, which he has denied. Following his detention, Washington recognized Rodriguez as the head of an interim government in Caracas.
The diplomatic engagement also came after the two countries announced a broad energy cooperation pact in August.
Under the agreement, Washington secured long-term rights covering more than 65 billion barrels of proven crude oil reserves across 17 Venezuelan oil fields through a binational joint venture.
