Drought and Floods: How El Nino Fuels Global Weather Extremes

6 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned of the extreme weather that the El Nino phenomenon will bring, fueled by "unusually warm ocean waters in the tropical Pacific."

"El Nino conditions are developing and are set to influence global temperature and rainfall patterns," the UN weather and climate agency said as quoted by Sciencealert on June 3, 2026.

El Nino is a natural climate phenomenon characterized by the warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. This phenomenon can alter wind patterns, air pressure, and rainfall in various parts of the world. The cycle generally occurs every two to seven years and lasts for around nine to 12 months.

El Nino triggers drought in Australia and Indonesia but brings floods to South America instead—the opposite of the La Nina phenomenon.

According to the WMO, most global climate models indicate that the current El Nino is likely to develop at least into a moderate category and possibly strong or even very strong. But the level of its intensity will continue to be monitored in the coming months.

The Secretary-General of the WMO, Andre Celeste Saulo, stated that the world must prepare for the impact of El Nino, which can exacerbate drought and extreme rainfall in several regions this year.

El Nino could increase the risk of heatwaves "both on land and in the ocean," said Saulo.

What is predicted to occur this year is expected to become even worse in the future. The results of a study from Pusan National University in South Korea indicate that El Nino, as well as La Nina, will be stronger going forward, computer model predicting a "shift to more regular and much stronger El Nino-La Nina extremes," said researcher Axel Timmermann, as quoted from New Scientist on June 3.

"As well as an intensification of ENSO impacts on remote regions, in particular Europe," he added.
