Earthquakes in Tanggamus and Banyuwangi Damage Dozens of Homes

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Recent earthquakes in Lampung and East Java have resulted in significant property damage. The M4.5 earthquake centered in Tanggamus Regency, Lampung, on the night of Friday, September 26, 2025, damaged 11 houses. Meanwhile, a larger tremor off the coast of Banyuwangi, East Java, damaged 73 houses across four different regencies.

The M4.5 earthquake in Tanggamus originated on land along the Semangko Fault line (also known as the Great Sumatran Fault). It struck precisely at 9:55 PM local time, with a shallow epicenter of only five kilometers, located 19 kilometers northwest of Tanggamus Regency.

According to the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Lampung Province, the damage was concentrated in Semaka District, affecting Sidodadi, Tugu Rejo, and Karang Rejo Villages.

"Although there were no casualties, this disaster resulted in 11 houses being damaged with varying degrees of severity, from minor to severe," said Wahyu Hidayat, a disaster analyst at the Lampung Province BPBD, when contacted in Bandarlampung on Saturday.

Wahyu noted that the earthquake was strongly felt in several sub-districts, and BPBD personnel immediately deployed to the location on Friday night to carry out mitigation and rapid response efforts.

He explained that given the sudden-onset characteristic of these earthquakes, the community must maintain preparedness and alertness. "Whether or not there will be aftershocks, we cannot predict, but at the very least, all districts located on the Semangko Fault line must remain on alert," he advised.

This preparedness is crucial to minimize impact, recalling events like the 1994 Liwa earthquake. Tanggamus has repeatedly experienced tremors, including an M5.3 earthquake last November and an M5.5 earthquake from the maritime area in August 2021.

Impact of the Banyuwangi Earthquake

A survey of the impact from the M5.3 earthquake, which originated at sea, 40 kilometers northeast of Banyuwangi in East Java, last Thursday afternoon, revealed widespread damage across Situbondo, Banyuwangi, Jember, and Bondowoso. The initial strength information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) was M5.7.

Based on the East Java BPBD Task Force update on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 6:00 a.m. local time, the quake resulted in one minor injury (Toni B. Rodiyah from Mrawan Village, Mrawan District) and one severely damaged house in Jember.

For Banyuwangi Regency, four houses sustained minor damage, two houses suffered moderate damage, three houses suffered severe damage, and one mosque was also affected. Meanwhile, in Bondowoso, one house suffered moderate damage, and two houses suffered severe damage.

In total, the earthquake damaged 73 houses across the affected regions. The Head of the East Java BPBD Task Force, Gatot Soebroto, confirmed that personnel support was immediately dispatched to all affected areas.

"East Java BPBD personnel, together with local BPBD teams, also distributed logistical assistance and conducted a quick assessment of the damages, in order to promptly follow up with providing material assistance," he stated from Surabaya on Saturday, September 27, 2025.
