TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi has handed over security matters ahead of the Indonesian Independence Day commemoration to National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Commander General Agus Subiyanto. Prasetyo declined to comment on rumors of potential unrest ahead of the commemoration.
"This is a technical matter for Pak Police Chief and Pak TNI Commander. This is not our area of expertise," Prasetyo said after attending a meeting with Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) leaders, Police Chief, and TNI Commander in Senayan on Monday, August 10, 2026.
According to Prasetyo, the government has prepared the best possible security measures. "But everything is okay. We are preparing everything as well as possible. Of course, that's part of our collective responsibility," said Prasetyo.
The news of potential unrest ahead of Independence Day was brought up by the President of the All Indonesian Trade Union Confederation, Andi Gani Nena, when submitting a draft of the proposed Manpower Bill to the House of Representatives (DPR) on August 3, 2026.
"As you know, major unrest is predicted to occur in August. And indeed, we are already experiencing situations on the ground that we are aware of as extremely vulnerable," Andi said. "Therefore, the Grand Coalition of Indonesian Labor Struggle reminds the House of Representatives (DPR) and the government to earnestly deliberate the Manpower Bill."
Separately, Agus Subiyanto warned the public not to be provoked by the conflicting information circulating ahead of the commemoration of Indonesian Independence Day. He emphasized that much information on social media is unconfirmed.
Agus asked citizens to continue their normal activities while TNI conducts routine patrols. The military, he said, is assisting the National Police across regions.
"Later, we will celebrate Indonesian Independence Day, let's welcome it with joy," Agus said.
