Fact Check: Did an Indonesian Mother Kill Her LGBT Son?

15 hours ago 15

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A Facebook post [archive] shared a photo of a middle-aged woman arrested by police. The post's narrative stated that the mother hired hitmen because she was disappointed to learn that her son was LGBT.

The account also claimed that the case occurred in Indramayu in 2019, and according to investigators at the time, the motive behind the incident was not only the victim's homosexuality, but also because the victim frequently abused his mother, sold items from the house, and even threatened to kill her.

Did this mother really kill her child because she was disappointed that he was LGBT?

FACT CHECK

Tempo verified this content through a reverse image search and comparison with credible media reports. The results showed that the photo was indeed related to the 2019 murder case in Indramayu. However, the circulating narrative is incorrect, as the mother hired the hitman not because of her son's sexual orientation, but because of the accumulation of deep disappointment over her son's bad character.

According to Tribunnews.com, the Indramayu Police have arrested a woman identified as DRH, suspected of masterminding the premeditated murder of her son, Carudin. The 50-year-old woman hired five executioners to kill the victim.

"The victim was murdered in the Gunung Kalong Protected Forest area, Cikawung Village, Ciselang Block, Terisi District, Indramayu Regency," said the Indramayu Police Chief at the time, Adjunct Senior Commissioner M. Yoris M.Y. Marzuki, on Friday, September 27, 2019.

Yoris explained that DRH had planned the murder well in advance. This extreme measure was taken because the victim frequently threatened to kill his mother if he was not given money or inheritance.

Several national television stations, including SINDOnews, Official iNews, and KOMPASTV, broadcast the news on their YouTube channels.

Chronology of Events

Yoris recounted the chronology of the brutal murder. Initially, Carudin asked WRN, who acted as a spiritual teacher, to help heal his mother, who often became angry. WRN agreed to the request.

However, Yoris continued, it turned out that WRN was in collusion with the victim's mother. Before the victim sought WRN's help, DRH had already asked WRN to execute her son.

On the day of the incident, WRN invited Carudin to perform a ritual in the Gunung Kalong protected forest. At the scene, other perpetrators were waiting. "The victim was executed by the other perpetrators until he died," said Yoris.

The perpetrators then stole several of the victim's belongings, including his car. The perpetrators entrusted the car to a witness. Police later arrested the perpetrators at their respective homes.

No Evidence That the Victim Was Murdered Because of Being LGBT

Although sexual orientation was mentioned in the suspect's confession and news reports, there are no police documents or the Indramayu District Court ruling, Case Number 398/Pid.B/2019/PN Idm, that state that the victim was killed solely because he was LGBT. The motives for DRH's murder included family conflict, alleged violence against his mother, and financial and property issues.

According to the Indramayu District Court Information System website, DRH was sentenced to six years in prison on Thursday, February 20, 2020. He was legally and convincingly proven to have violated Article 340 of the Indonesian Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 340 of the Indonesian Criminal Code. Article 55 paragraph (2) of the Criminal Code. The judge found DRH guilty of committing a crime of intentionally and with premeditation, taking the life of another person as an advocate.

Therefore, simplifying this case to "a mother killed her son because she was LGBT" is potentially misleading because it ignores other factors in the investigation.

CONCLUSION

The Tempo Fact Check team's verification concluded that the claim that the mother in Indramayu killed her son because she was disappointed that he was LGBT is misleading.
