TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Canadian PGA Tour star Matt McQuillan passed away at the age of 45 earlier this week, according to the New York Post and Daily Mail.
An obituary online cited that the golfer died on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Kingston General Hospital in Ontario, Canada.
The obituary described McQuillan as "a beloved figure within Kingston's golfing community and beyond" for his "welcoming personality and unwavering kindness."
"Whether on the course or in everyday life, he had a remarkable ability to bring people together, offering encouragement, laughter, and genuine friendship to everyone he met," it read, according to the Kingston Whig-Standard newspaper.
“He will be deeply missed by many and his spirit, love and compassion will be remembered every day. Rest easy, Matty. We love you," the obituary read.
No cause of death was listed.
The obituary noted that McQuillan was taught by his father, Mark, "how to swing the club" at the age of ten.
He started his career with college golf at Oklahoma State in 2000, before transferring to the University of Georgia. He turned pro in 2003.
By 2005, he managed one win on the Canadian Tour at the Telus Edmonton Open. He also took the crown at the 2008 Cataraqui Pro-Am.
The Canada native earned his PGA Tour card through Q-School in 2010, and started competing in 2011.
Throughout his career, he played in 32 PGA Tour events, making the cut nine times. His best performance came at the John Deere Classic in 2011 when he tied for third place alongside two-time champion Zach Johnson.
Citing The Sun, this performance was notable for McQuillan's bogey-free 64 in his final round that catapulted him up the leaderboard.
During recent years, Matt McQuillan returned to his hometown in Kingston, Ontario, to teach golf, “helping introduce and develop the next generation of Canadian golfers.”
“Matt McQuillan’s golf story began in Kingston, Ontario, and no matter where the game took him, Kingston remained at the heart of it. Golf Canada joins the Canadian golf community in mourning the passing of McQuillan,” Golf Canada said in its tribute.
