TEMPO.CO, Jakarta France and the United Kingdom are set to jointly host a conference in Paris on Friday, April 17, 2026, which is aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the French presidency announced on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

The Élysée Palace stated that French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will co-lead the summit, according to BFM TV as cited by Anadolu.

The conference will bring together "non-belligerent countries willing to contribute" to "a multinational and purely defensive mission aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz when security conditions allow," the French presidency added.

A spokesperson for the UK Prime Minister's office stated, as cited by France24: "The summit will advance work towards a coordinated, independent, multinational plan to safeguard international shipping once the conflict ends."

UK Prime Minister Starmer said on Monday that the UK has gathered more than 40 countries.

In early March, Macron stated that France and its allies were preparing a "defensive" mission to reopen the strategically crucial waterway. However, he ruled out ship escorts under "bombings."

"Several dozen countries have already taken part in preparatory work led in particular by the chiefs of staff to define the framework for such a mission," said French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot to Radio France Internationale on Tuesday.

"It is a matter of coordinating with the coastal states," he added.

Washington and Tehran held talks in the Pakistani capital over the weekend, marking their most significant engagement since diplomatic relations were severed in 1979.

This is part of a broader effort to end the US-Israeli attacks on Iran that have killed over 3,300 people since February 28, before a fragile two-week ceasefire was agreed last Tuesday.

However, the talks did not yield a conclusion. The current ceasefire was mediated and announced by Pakistan on April 8.

Following the stalemate, US President Donald Trump announced a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, which took effect at 14:00 GMT on Monday.
