Glenny Kairupan, Prabowo's Close Ally, Tapped as Garuda Indonesia's New CEO

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Glenny Kairupan was officially appointed as the new CEO of Garuda Indonesia, replacing Wamildan Tsani, during the Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders (RUPSLB). The meeting was held at the Garuda Management Building Auditorium in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

Glenny is familiar with the state-owned airline, having previously served as a commissioner, on the board of the GIAA issuer, while Tsani was CEO.

An alumnus of the Indonesian Armed Forces Academy (AKABRI) - Army Division, Glenny graduated in 1973. His close ties to politics and President Prabowo Subianto are notable; he served as a Member of the Supervisory Board of the Gerindra Party from 2020 to 2025.

In 2015, Glenny ran unsuccessfully for Vice Governor of North Sulawesi with running mate Maya Rumantir, losing to the ticket of Olly Dondokambey and Steven Kandouw.

Although born in Manado in 1949, Glenny grew up in Jakarta's Petojo area. He was a neighbor to AM Hendropriyono, who later inspired him to join AKABRI (now known as the Military Academy).

Military Career and Retirement

Glenny's military service began upon graduation in 1973 and concluded in 2004, culminating in the rank of Major General. During his career, he participated in Operations Seroja, the occupation of East Timor, and Operation Guntur.

His service included overseas assignments, such as training in Hawaii with the 25th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army in 1980. He also completed the Advanced Officer Course at the Army Doctrine, Education and Training Command in 1983.

Prior to his retirement in 2004, his career included a stint at the National Resilience Institute as a Middle-Level Instructor in Geography and Natural Resources, where he held the rank of Brigadier General.

More recently, on August 10, 2025, Glenny Kairupan was one of the retired military personnel to receive an honorary promotion to Lieutenant General from President Prabowo Subianto in recognition of his service during the East Timor Operation.
