TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has yet to receive any reports from neighboring nations about wafting wildfire smoke, amid firefighting efforts to contain blazes that have engulfed approximately 107,000 hectares in the country.
"We are working as hard as possible to avoid disturbing our neighboring countries," said Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago at a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.
According to Djamari, the government is ramping up efforts to put out fire by air, deploying approximately 43 helicopters and 10 to 15 fixed-wing aircraft as needed.
On the ground, the Indonesian government also exerts firefighting endeavors, including using flexible tanks as temporary water reservoirs to support officers.
Djamari assured that the government has not received any reports from other countries regarding smoke disturbances caused by wildfires in Indonesia.
"As of today, not one has been affected by the smoke," he said.
The government has recorded approximately 107,000 hectares of land affected by forest fires across several regions of Indonesia.
The response is focused on six vulnerable provinces: Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan.
These regions are among the hardest hit due to peatlands that are susceptible to fire during the dry season.
In addition to these provinces, fires have also occurred in Mount Bromo in East Java, Mount Gede Pangrango in West Java, and Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara.
