TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of Indonesia's National Democratic (NasDem) Party members flocked to Tempo's office in Palmerah, West Jakarta, on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, to protest the cover story of Tempo Magazine's latest issue.
Wibi Andrino, the chair of the NasDem Jakarta regional leadership council (DPW), said the party members intended to clarify Tempo's report, which they deemed at odds with journalistic standards. "Tempo displayed an illustration video of Bapak Surya Paloh, [that] for us was demeaning," said Wibi from the top of a command vehicle.
Party members began arriving at Tempo's office at noon, donning the distinctive blue NasDem party uniforms while carrying several posters containing their demands.
The crowd also performed a symbolic act by throwing rotten flowers onto the Tempo office's courtyard. "We love Tempo, but it's not the same now as Tempo used to be," one of the protesters exclaimed.
At around 12:30 p.m. Jakarta time, a number of representatives of the protesters entered the office and held audience with several of Tempo's editors-in-chief regarding the magazine cover they deemed problematic.
The Editor-in-Chief of Tempo, Setri Yasa, said his side appreciated the opinions expressed by the NasDem protesters, stating that "Different perspectives regarding news reporting are common in democracy," said Setri on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
Setri explained that the reports published by Tempo have been verified, while giving space for the NasDem Party or others to clarify the findings.
According to Setri, all feedback regarding journalistic products can be addressed through mechanisms available within the Press Council. Meanwhile, Setri extended apologies regarding the magazine cover that offended NasDem Party chair Surya Paloh and Nasdem Party members.
