Indonesia Among the Largest Tuna Producers in the World, Surpassing Taiwan

5 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) stated that Indonesia is one of the largest producers of tuna in the world. Data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) noted that in 2022, Indonesia's tuna capture volume reached 752,118 tons. This surpassed Taiwan, which was in second place, by 50 percent.

Staff Expert of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Trian Yunanda, mentioned that Indonesia's tuna capture area is spread across three main oceans, namely the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean.

"It is reasonable that we are the largest tuna producer because we are located in the convergence of several tuna-rich oceans," said Trian during a Maritime Discussion in Jakarta, on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

According to Trian, the tuna fishing sector contributes to the export value of the country. Last year, the export value of the overall fisheries production reached US$5.9 billion, dominated by tuna, skipjack, and bonito commodities, amounting to Rp17.1 trillion, with a total capture volume of 278 thousand tons.

Trian stated that almost all types of tuna resources are currently spread in Indonesia's Fishery Management Area (FMA), including in the Natuna Sea, which was previously unknown as a tuna capture zone. He suggested that this condition may be related to seasonal and climate changes affecting the distribution of catch results.

In the discussion, Trian also mentioned Indonesia's success in increasing the quota for capturing three types of tuna in the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) session. This agenda took place in La Reunion, France, from April 7 to 17.

"The quota for big eye tuna increased by 2,791 tons, reaching 21,396 tons for the period of 2026-2028, and the skipjack tuna quota was set at 138 thousand tons. Meanwhile, the adjustment of the yellowfin tuna quota has been agreed upon, set at 45,426 tons for 2025," said Trian.
