TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has sealed Umang Island in the waters of Pandeglang Regency, Banten. The sealing was carried out after the five-hectare island was advertised for sale on the internet.
The Directorate General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance, Pung Nugroho Saksono, said that preliminary investigations indicated that the island was managed by PT GSM and used for tourism, including resorts and marine activities.
"After the sealing on Thursday, we will conduct further investigation regarding regulations and ownership," Pung said in a press conference at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Jakarta, on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
However, the management has stated that they have never sold the island through an online platform. As of April 7, 2026, the advertisement for the sale of Umang Island has also been removed from the xmarks.prestige property agent's website.
In the preliminary investigation, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs also found several licensing violations. The managers of Umang Island were found to lack the documents for the Approval of Compliance with Marine Space Use Activities (PKKPRL), recommendations for the use of small islands, and marine tourism permits. As a result, the KKP also sealed the resort and glamping facilities on the island.
Pung regretted the promotion of island sales, especially considering its relatively close location to Jakarta, approximately 183 kilometers away. He emphasized that the sealing is evidence of the KKP's commitment to safeguarding Indonesia's maritime regions. In the future, the KKP will not hesitate to take action against violations.
"The state has regulations. Management of small islands cannot be done arbitrarily, including in development," said Pung.
