Indonesia's 2026 World Cup Chances Hinge on Victory Against Saudi Arabia, Says Analyst

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Football analyst Kesit Budi Handoyo emphasized that the Indonesian national team must secure a victory in their opening match against Saudi Arabia in the fourth round of 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers.

A win, he said, would significantly enhance Indonesia’s chances of reaching the final round in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Indonesia is set to face Saudi Arabia at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on September 9, 2025. Three days later, under the guidance of coach Patrick Kluivert, the team will play a crucial match against Iraq.

“The result of the first match against Saudi Arabia will determine whether Indonesia qualifies directly or must go through the fifth round after the fourth,” Kesit told Tempo on September 26, 2025.

Patrick Kluivert announced the 28-player squad for the fourth round on the Indonesian national team’s official Instagram account on September 24. The players, along with coaching staff and officials, will assemble in Saudi Arabia on October 1 for a seven-day training camp.

High Stakes Against Saudi Arabia

Kesit warned that a loss to Saudi Arabia would complicate Indonesia’s path. “Winning against Saudi Arabia would significantly increase our chances of direct qualification. But a loss would make advancing far more difficult, including the likelihood of finishing second in the group,” he explained.

Indonesia has a solid record against Saudi Arabia, which could boost morale for the upcoming match. In the third round, Indonesia held Saudi Arabia to a 1-1 draw at the King Abdullah Stadium on September 5, 2024, and later achieved a 2-0 victory in Jakarta on November 19, 2024.

However, the fourth-round match in Saudi Arabia presents a challenge. “Saudi Arabia will play cautiously after failing to win at home last time. They will also aim to avenge their defeat in Jakarta,” Kesit noted.

Kluivert’s Tactical Advantage

Kesit believes coach Patrick Kluivert has an edge with the current squad. The addition of forwards Mauro Zilstra, Miliano Jonathans, and Beckham Putra Nugraha could help Indonesia penetrate the opponent’s defense. “These players can inject new energy into the team and create more scoring opportunities,” Kesit said.

Given the squad’s recent performances in FIFA Matchday matches, Kesit remains optimistic. “If Indonesia wins against Saudi Arabia, the team’s confidence will grow for the clash with Iraq, a side we struggled to beat in the second round. There is still hope for a promising fourth-round campaign,” he added.

To secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup, Indonesia must top Group B. A second-place finish still offers a chance through the inter-confederation playoff in March 2026.
