TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One in three children in the Gaza Strip went without food for an entire day in the past 24 hours amid severe shortages caused by Israel’s blockade, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) reported, citing Anadolu on Friday.
The agency highlighted findings from a rapid assessment by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), which confirmed that many children in Gaza had not eaten at all during the previous day.
UNRWA warned that the worsening humanitarian crisis was forcing families into desperate survival strategies, with some children pushed into labor or begging.
It added that the combined physical and psychological toll of hunger and ongoing conflict posed grave risks to children’s health, safety, and long-term development.
The UN agency stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire to protect children and vulnerable groups, warning that without swift international intervention, the situation could deteriorate further.
The IRC’s assessment, released Wednesday, painted an alarming picture: “One in three young children went a full day without food in the past 24 hours, 70% of children are having trouble sleeping and nearly one in five are withdrawn or silent.”
The group also found that only 1 percent of Gaza households were food secure, while most families with young children showed clear signs of malnutrition.
Since March 2, Israel has closed all border crossings into Gaza, blocking food, medicine, and humanitarian supplies.
Aid trucks have piled up at entry points, but most remain barred from entering. When limited aid is allowed in, it falls far short of meeting minimum needs.
Gaza authorities allege that many of the trucks are looted by gangs operating under Israeli protection.
On August 22, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) declared famine in Gaza City and warned that the disaster could spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September.
Israel has deliberately starved the Palestinian population as part of the genocide it has carried out against them for two years. The hunger in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of 442 Palestinians as part of the broader toll of 65,502 fatalities and 167,376 injuries.
