Indonesia's Forex Reserves Rise to US$145.6 Billion in June

TEMPO.CO, JakartaBank Indonesia (BI) said the country's foreign exchange reserves rose slightly to US$145.6 billion at the end of June 2026, up from US$144.9 billion in May, providing a buffer against external risks and supporting rupiah stability.

The reserve position is equivalent to 5.4 months of imports and government external debt servicing, well above the international adequacy standard of around three months of imports, BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said during a press conference on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

Perry also reiterated the central bank's projection that Indonesia's current account deficit in 2026 will remain manageable at between 0.5 percent and 1.3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).

Bank Indonesia reported that foreign capital inflows reached US$8.5 billion in the first half of 2026, driven mainly by purchases of government bonds and Bank Indonesia's rupiah-denominated securities (Sekuritas Rupiah Bank Indonesia or SRBI).

According to Perry, net inflows into government bonds alone totaled around US$100 million through July 20.

The central bank said it continues to coordinate closely with the government to maintain rupiah stability amid global market volatility. As of July 21, the rupiah traded at around Rp17,885 per U.S. dollar, largely unchanged from Rp17,880 at the end of June.

To support the currency, Bank Indonesia has continued to intervene in both onshore and offshore foreign exchange markets, including through spot and Domestic Non-Deliverable Forward (DNDF) transactions.

Perry added that BI has adjusted SRBI yields to attract foreign portfolio inflows and bolster rupiah stability. Nonresident holdings of SRBI rose from Rp238.1 trillion in mid-June to Rp288.7 trillion as of July 20, accounting for 27.1 percent of total outstanding SRBI securities.

The central bank has also introduced incentives, including a 10 percent reduction in hedging swap rates, to enhance the attractiveness of Indonesian financial instruments for foreign investors.

In addition, BI is expanding foreign exchange transactions involving the offshore Chinese yuan (CNH) against the rupiah through spot and swap instruments, in line with the growing use of local currency settlements in trade and investment transactions.
