TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) reported that Indonesia’s Balance of Payments (BOP) recorded a deficit of US$7.8 billion in 2025, a sharp reversal from the US$7.2 billion surplus recorded in 2024.

The current account posted a deficit of US$1.5 billion, equivalent to 0.1 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), down from a 2024 deficit of US$8.6 billion, or 0.6 percent of GDP.

“This development is driven by a higher trade balance surplus, reflecting stronger export performance, particularly in manufactured goods,” said Ramdan Denny Prakoso, Executive Director of BI’s Communication Department, in an official statement on Friday, February 20, 2026.

Indonesia’s trade in goods recorded a surplus of US$49.8 billion in 2025, up from US$39.8 billion in 2024. The growth was mainly supported by an increase in the non-oil trade balance.

Rising Deficits in Services and Primary Income

The services account deficit widened to US$19.8 billion, compared with US$18.5 billion in 2024. “This increase is largely due to higher deficits in telecommunications services, reflecting the growth of the information and communication sector,” Denny explained.

The primary income balance also saw a larger deficit of US$38.2 billion, up from US$35.8 billion in 2024, driven by increased payments on returns from direct and portfolio investments.

Secondary Income and Remittances Support Balance

The secondary income balance, which includes remittances, recorded a surplus of US$6.7 billion in 2025, up from US$5.9 billion in 2024. The growth is attributed to higher remittance receipts from Indonesian migrant workers.

Capital and Financial Transactions Shift to Deficit

Capital and financial transactions swung to a deficit of US$4.2 billion in 2025, a sharp reversal from the US$18 billion surplus in 2024. Denny attributed the shift to outflows in foreign portfolio and other investments amid global financial market uncertainty throughout 2025.
