TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government and the working committee of the Police Law revision have agreed to extend the retirement age of national police members.
Deputy Minister of Law Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej said the retirement age for 4-star police officers or the National Police chief is set at 60 years old and eligible for a one-year extension.
"For high-ranking officers with four stars, the retirement age is at the highest 60 years and can be extended by a maximum of one year, based on the president's directive," he said during a working meeting at the DPR building in Jakarta on Monday, June 8, 2026.
The regulations regarding the retirement age are stipulated in the list of inventory issues (DIM) for the revision of Police Law No. 55 regarding the honorable discharge of police officers from their positions.
It is listed that the retirement age for police officers with the rank of enlisted personnel and non-commissioned officers is 59 years, while the retirement age for low-rank, mid-rank, and high-rank officers is 60 years.
According to Edward, the retirement age is differentiated between the ranks to motivate officers. "If everyone retires at the same age of 60, what will actually happen is demotivation," he said.
In addition, the retirement age is based on the existing retirement ages in the civil service (ASN). The government also decided not to set the maximum retirement age at 63, to allow for regeneration within the police forces.
"By looking at the workload and how it is on the ground, we have distinguished between 59 and 60," he said.
Edward believed that a sweeping retirement age will result in "zero growth" as the proportion between retirements and new recruits should be balanced.
Subsequently, all members of the committee agreed with the government's proposal. With this approval, the retirement age of police officers is extended from the previous maximum retirement age of 58 years old. However, the service period for police officers can be extended up to 60 years for officers with special expertise.
