Indonesia Urged to Ratify Conventions in Support of Palestine

7 hours ago 7

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Executive Director of Amnesty International Indonesia, Usman Hamid, has called on the government to immediately ratify several international conventions in response to Israel’s genocidal practices against Palestine. According to Usman, as the current President of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Indonesia must ratify the Refugee Convention, the Apartheid Convention, and the Rome Statute.

Usman urged the Indonesian government to take decisive action following Amnesty International's latest findings regarding systematic crimes by the Zionist regime in the West Bank, a territory under the Palestinian Authority.

"Indonesia holds a strategic position as the current leader of the UNHRC. This opportunity must be seized to advocate for international mechanisms that can bolster protections for Palestinian citizens," Usman told reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

Additionally, he pressured Indonesia to investigate international humanitarian crimes for referral to the International Criminal Court, following the precedent set by South Africa regarding severe human rights violations. He argued that if the Indonesian government is earnest in its support for Palestinian peace, it must take the concrete step of ratifying these conventions.

"If Indonesia promptly ratifies the Rome Statute, the Refugee Convention, and the Anti-Apartheid Convention, this would significantly enhance Indonesia's legitimacy in the eyes of the international community," Usman stated.

He further emphasized the necessity for tangible action to ensure that Indonesia's support for Palestinian independence is not just mere political rhetoric but materializes through legal and diplomatic measures.

Marzuki Darusman, Chairperson of Amnesty International Indonesia, also urged Jakarta to mobilize international pressure through the UNHRC and other global forums to bring an end to Israel's campaign of violence.

He suggested that this path is far more effective than relying on the Board of Peace led by U.S. President Donald Trump, which he warned risks normalizing Israel's crimes of apartheid and genocide.

"As President of the UNHRC, Indonesia has a moral responsibility. It cannot remain passive; it must lead from the front, vigorously rallying international solidarity and organizing diplomatic pressure to stop Israeli violence," Marzuki said. "Silence and passivity are forms of condoning humanitarian crimes."

Amnesty International Report

Amnesty International recently released a specialized report titled "Erasing anything Palestinian: Israel's ethnic cleansing of West Bank Bedouin and herding communities" in the Israeli-occupied Area C of the West Bank. The report details how Zionist authorities support the genocide and apartheid practices carried out by extremist settlers within the occupied Palestinian territories.

In its official statement, Amnesty asserted that Israel is deliberately committing crimes against humanity through forced displacement. The report meticulously documents how Zionist authorities have accelerated annexation through a sustained campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian population.

Grazia Careccia, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa, stated that Israel is intentionally implementing policies designed to purge Palestinian residents from their ancestral lands.

"The Israeli government has authorized the construction of illegal settlements in the West Bank at a pace three times faster than before. Our research indicates that the number of illegal structures has reached 16,000 units this year, compared to 5,000 units in the past," Careccia noted.
