TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Indonesian national badminton player and legendary figure, Iie Sumirat, passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2025. The news of his passing was shared by several badminton personalities through social media.

Hariyanto Arbi, the 1995 world champion, conveyed his heartfelt condolences via Instagram.

“I and the Indonesian badminton community express deep sorrow over the passing of Kang Iie Sumirat. Thank you for your dedication and tireless efforts in bringing pride to the nation. Your service and inspiration will always be remembered. Farewell, Kang Iie. May you rest in peace,” he wrote.

Iie Sumirat was a key figure in Indonesia’s badminton success during the 1970s. He was highly regarded for his role in helping the national team secure several prestigious international titles, including the Thomas Cup.

He was part of the Indonesian squad that won the 1976 Thomas Cup. Four years later, he returned as a leading singles player and once again played a vital role in securing the title for Indonesia in 1979.

In addition to his contributions to team events, Iie also found success in individual competitions. He earned a bronze medal at the inaugural World Championship in 1977.

A year earlier, he clinched the title at the Asian Invitation Championship in Bangkok by defeating China’s top seed Hou Jiachang in the men’s singles final with scores of 12-15, 15-8, 18-15.

That tournament was held concurrently with the All England, with Indonesia sending two teams. Alongside Iie, the men's doubles duo Ade Chandra and Christian Hadinata also competed and brought home the title.

Following his retirement from professional play, Iie continued to contribute to the sport by coaching young athletes at the SGS Bandung club. His dedication to nurturing new talent left a lasting impact on Indonesia's badminton development.

His passing marks a significant loss for the national sports community, particularly in badminton. However, his achievements, fighting spirit, and exemplary character will remain an enduring part of Indonesia’s golden era in badminton.
