TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Studio Wastra Pinankabu brought traditional songket to represent Indonesia in the international exhibition, Original 2025, held in Tijuana, Mexico, from November 13-16, 2025. The exhibition, initiated by Secretaria de Cultura (Mexican Ministry of Culture), showcased textile crafts and cultural heritage from various countries, involving over 300 artisans from around the world.
Nanda Wirawan, a revitalization activist of Minangkabau traditional textiles from Studio Wastra Pinankabu, said the studio was chosen by the Directorate of Cultural Promotion, Indonesian Ministry of Culture, to present Minangkabau songket (Indonesian traditional handwoven fabric) on the international stage.
"There were several candidates. It turned out that Studio Wastra Pinankabu was selected for its effort in digitalizing old cultural heritage, sustainable product, environmental insight within, and empowerment," said Nanda in an interview before departure.
Cultural Heritage Showcase
Original 2025 served as a platform to showcase various crafts based on cultural heritage, the use of natural materials, and sustainable empowerment. Apart from displaying the revitalized Minangkabau songket by Studio Wastra Pinankabu, the studio also curated and presented the best works of artisans from West Sumatra.
Nanda explained that they endeavored to involve various songket weavers from West Sumatra. "We tried to involve all of them. Some were not included because we were looking for crafts of a certain quality," she said.
In the curation process, Studio Wastra Pinankabu considered the fineness of the work and its suitability with the concept of revitalizing old motifs. The artists and artisans involved included Nasrul Palapa, Eridal, Iskandar, Fitri Haryanti, and Vivi Elga Desmi. They showcased songket, embroidery, leather crafts, and silver jewelry.
The studio's participation at Original 2025 was supported and facilitated by the Directorate General of Diplomacy, Promotion, and Cultural Cooperation, Indonesian Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Mexico and Secretaría de Cultura de México.
The event commenced with an opening and a runway fashion show on November 13, featuring traditional Minangkabau costumes from various regions. The exhibition lasted for a full four days.
On November 15, a documentary film titled "Threads of Memory, Reviving Minangkabau Songket" was screened, followed by a presentation on Minangkabau songket by Nanda Wirawan and Iswandi from Studio Wastra Pinankabu.
