TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 22-year-old man in Cambodia has died from H5N1 human avian influenza, the Ministry of Health said in a statement released on Sunday, November 16, 2025, as reported by Xinhua and cited by Antara.
"A laboratory result from the National Institute of Public Health showed on November 15, 2025, that the man was positive for H5N1 virus," the Cambodian Ministry of Health statement said.
The man lived in Kien Khleang, Chroy Changvar District in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.
Health authorities are investigating the source of the infection and are examining every suspected case and individuals who have had contact with the victim to prevent an outbreak in the community, the statement added.
Tamiflu (oseltamivir), an antiviral drug to prevent the spread of bird flu, has also been distributed to individuals who had direct contact with the victim, the statement further added.
The H5N1 is a type of flu that usually spreads among sick poultry, but sometimes can be transmitted from birds to humans. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and severe respiratory illness.
The Ministry of Health in Cambodia urges the public to be more vigilant and to refrain from consuming sick or dead poultry, while emphasizing that bird flu still poses a threat to public health.
Throughout 2025, the Southeast Asian country has recorded a total of 17 cases of H5N1 bird flu in humans, with six deaths, according to the Cambodian Ministry of Health.
